Archbishop Christophe Pierre, Ambassador of the Holy See, sends his blessings and a message to the Catholic community, as we prepare to celebrate the 6th National Catholic Leadership Congress on Hispanic Ministry, Raíces y Alas 2022. The congress will convene in Washington, DC on April 26-30, 2022 at the DoubleTree by Hilton, Crystal City-Washington, DC.
“Our roots are important. We should never lose our roots, in our roots we have our identity, especially the religious dimensions of our life… we have to build upon these roots. Alas means wings, without wings you stay put; you cannot go forward. Pope Francis tells us permanently that we have to go forward; forward outside our zone of comfort, so that we may reach people where they are with their culture, with their identity, difficulties, riches. Precisely, most of the people we are encountering as persons in charge of pastoral life are Hispanic origin, so we need to understand them. This will be the purpose of this meeting: to understand better the context where we are, where we live, especially in the Catholic Church, where a good part of the members of the faithful come from Hispanic origin, from many countries, South America in particular, some have been here for a long time, some have just arrived, they are in a period of transition, but we need to pay attention to them so that we may help them make this kind of difficult transition,” says Archbishop Pierre.
The National Catholic Council for Hispanic Ministry is gathering national leaders will convene under the theme: Raíces y Alas 2022, Prophetic Voices: Ser Puentes Para Una Nueva Epoca. In collaboration with the USCCB’ Office for Hispanic/Latino Affairs, Hispanic Ministry leaders from pastoral organizations, apostolic movements, religious communities, Catholic publishers, dioceses, and educational institutions, and eight USCCB offices, among others, for an in-depth dialogue to discern and develop pastoral responses and initiatives to the ministerial priorities of Family, Pastoral Juvenil Hispana, Social Justice, and Pastoral Formation.
Raíces y Alas 2022 includes a Day of Advocacy where Hispanic ministry leaders will visit the US Congress to meet with their legislators to advocate for a comprehensive immigration reform and DACA. Young leaders from throughout the US are being prepared to lift their prophetic voices as advocates for these issues and as the spokespersons during the congressional visits.
